Some Pages From An Altered Book...Under Vesuvius

In 2011, I completed my first artist's book -- a 92 page altered book I called "Under Vesuvius."  The original book was a slender, older British volume composed largely of text with some smallish photos highlighting art related to the historical eruptions of Mt. Vesuvius, the beautiful but destructive volcano that haunts Naples and destroyed Pompeii.  In altering the book, I attempted to interact with the existing text and photos, but every page was substantially altered with collage, paper-cutting, ephemera pockets containing vintage photos and postcards, and other techniques.  The book now explores themes of danger, a murderous environment, terrible beauty and small moments of life lived in the shadow of menace (with occasional touches of whimsy).

Above, the frontis piece; below, detail from several interior pages and the back spread.
